Insights of an intern

By Angel Witney

I was first introduced to Seven Hills at a PR coffee morning at my university. As a politics student at the time, I had a keen interest in current affairs. I also loved to channel my creativity through drama and writing – and still do. Seven Hills offered the opportunity to utilise and develop these skills further.

I applied for the Seven Hills Mission Boot Camp to learn more about the communications industry and particularly about Seven Hills’ work and culture. Mission Boot Camp is an action-packed day in which participants work in teams to create a campaign and experience the daily tasks of a campaign executive. The day included creating a campaign, planning an event, pitching to journalists, and presenting ideas to the team. From this I was offered a place on the Internship Programme, which gave me the opportunity to intern part-time during my final year of university.

As part of the marketing team during my internship, my main role was to help develop and promote the Change Makers podcast. My day-to-day tasks included researching guests for the interviews, creating social media content and executing marketing strategies. I had the opportunity to lead initiatives to promote the podcast using LinkedIn and find new streams of advertising. A particular highlight from my internship was being a part of telling the stories of some extremely inspirational people in politics, business, and philanthropy.

Due to my internship beginning during the peak of the pandemic, I worried that working remotely would hinder my ability to integrate into the team. However, the welcoming and friendly culture at Seven Hills enabled me to settle in quickly. Everyone is very approachable, helpful and happy to answer any questions.

From writing op-eds to contacting clients, excellent written skills are vital for prospective interns, as well as a positive attitude and ability to manage your time effectively. The team helped me to nurture all of these skills, which has certainly helped me as I have transitioned to a full-time, permanent role.

My experience working closely on Change Makers and with the marketing team gave me insights into Seven Hills’ core mission: to campaign for businesses that are a positive force for good. This is something I have carried through to my PR work since starting as a full-time Campaign Executive in June 2021. In this role, I work on a range of client accounts across both our Innovation and Purpose practices.

If you are looking for an immersive internship experience where you will learn new skills, receive exceptional mentorship and work alongside a brilliant team, then the Seven Hills internship is for you. It is an excellent route into the business that prepares you fully for a permanent role. I would encourage anyone and everyone to apply!
