With yesterday marking the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, Michael Hayman caught up with international law firm Mishcon de Reya’s Deputy Chairman, Anthony Julius to discuss what degree Magna Carta is still relevant in today’s world and whether its principles need to be restated.
The charter first protected the rights and freedoms of society and established that the king was subject to the law. Giving his professional opinion, Anthony considers the extent its principles need to be rephrased today, commenting that: “The rule of law does not need to be restated because it was adequately stated in Magna Carta. It’s not a bad thing to be reminded of those principles from time to time and if it’s associated with a certain amount of national self-celebration, that’s a small price to pay”.
