SEVEN HILLS SOCIALS

At Seven Hills we pride ourselves on our determination, hard work and willingness to go the extra mile. Similarly, we embrace the opportunity to spend time with our colleagues outside the office and raise glass to recent wins and achievements together.

We host monthly ‘First Friday Drinks’ at a local favourite, The Queen Adelaide. The early finish on a Friday means we see a majority of the team wrap up and head down to the garden and welcome in the weekend.

In addition to this, we schedule larger, quarterly team socials. Recent socials include: bowling at All Star Lanes, feasting at Putney Pies, and a round at Putt in the Park – conveniently located right next to the office.

Fridays at Seven Hills

Each Friday at Seven Hills we enjoy a whole team catered lunch together, this is soon followed by our weekly drinks trolley and, more often than not, the Friday quiz.

INTERNAL TRAINING

We have developed a series of training sessions that are led by members of our senior team and run internally each quarter.

These sessions give the team a greater understanding into the tools we use and the day-to-day running of our campaigns.

PRACTICAL TRAINING SESSIONS

  • Joining client accounts
  • Newspaper reviews
  • Media monitoring
  • Selling in and pitching to the media
  • Client Handling
  • Time management
  • Packaging a story
  • Editorial
  • Day to day tools: Gorkana/Factiva/Roxhill

TEAM

WE ARE GREAT WHEN WE COLLABORATE

We are a team that cares about each other and each others’ work: we work best when we work together.

We believe that good ideas can and should come from everyone.

We champion talent: in giving our people every opportunity to thrive and take responsibility.

Seven Hills Change Maker Award Series

The Seven Hills Change Maker award series is an opportunity to recognise when members of our team go above and beyond in generating brilliant results – whether it’s delivering a superb campaign, a fantastic new business win, a wonderful event, a beautiful piece of design or editorial, or spearheading a great new operational idea.

Gold Standard: The Design Studio’s Hannah Pellatt receives Duke of Edinburgh Award

Hannah Pellatt

Seven years after setting out to complete my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, I find myself at Buckingham Palace. Told to arrive wearing shoes that wouldn’t sink into the well-kept grass, I’m excited to meet royalty and bring my Duke of Edinburgh journey to an end in the most regal of surroundings.

I began my Duke of Edinburgh Award in 2011 and it’s been an uphill struggle since: made up of much more than a couple of hikes and boil in the bag rice. To complete the programme, you have to finish a four-day expedition, develop a new skill, take part in a physical activity every week for 12 months, and volunteer in the community for a further year.

In my case, that has taken me from a 70-mile trek across the Lake District through torrential rain to an incredible volunteering experience with refugee charity Love to Learn and advancing my yoga practice.

Following my successful completion of the above, I was invited to the palace by The Duke of York and The Earl and Countess of Wessex. Celebrities in attendance included Mary Berry, Aled Jones and Warwick Davis.

The award is the world’s leading youth achievement recognition, giving millions of 14 to 24-year-olds the opportunity to be the very best they can be, and I am proud to be counted among the recipients.

I was called up to accept my award from Laura Wright, the classical singer who wrote the Invictus games anthem. After a short, friendly conversation I breathed a sigh of relief and took in my surroundings. The hikes, extra hours and years of commitment had come to a brilliant end.

Since 1956, the Duke of Edinburgh award has helped more 400,000 young people to lead great lives and give back. To find out how you can support the programme, visit their website here.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT ALLOWANCE

Our annual personal development allowance sits alongside our internal training programme The aim of the allowance is to provide the funding for you to attend seminars, workshops and classes to enhance your professional development during your career at Seven Hills.

The allowance is £250 per year and requests can be made very simply by emailing/speaking to the Operations Manager.

So far we have seen people attend blogging masterclasses, a Photoshop day-long course, the DigitalAgenda Impact Awards and a paid-for-seat at the changing face of Fintech and UK Banking dinner.

Other options include clubbing your allowance together as a group to purchase a training session of a higher value, e.g. a session from an expert on how to get the most out of social media for a campaign.

Seven Hills team members are encouraged to monitor regular industry relevant events and training courses. These are circulated on a monthly basis, however, we recommend looking at events and courses from the following sources:

Insights of an Intern

Sophie Currah

I remember receiving the call in May to tell me I had been accepted to take on a Seven Hills internship. I was delighted by the news – although to have successfully stepped-up to become a full-time Campaign Executive as a result has been even more exciting!

The word ‘intern’ can undeniably conjure negative connotations – worried about how much time you will be spending at the kettle or in front of the photocopier. I arrived on my first day and was pleasantly surprised to do little of either – discovering early on that life as a Seven Hills intern is fast-paced and full on.

I was thrown into the deep end from day one; pitching ideas to boost social media engagement, taking part in client events, preparing briefing documents, and joining the daily newspaper reviews.

My Seven Hills intern experience strengthened my passion for current affairs and my understanding of issue-based businesses. It also opened my eyes to working with sectors that I did not know I was interested in.

Coming from a background in politics, I found myself naturally edging towards a career in communications and PR, but was petrified by the huge world of tech. Little did I know, I would finish my four-week internship with a newfound love for tech, and the innovation and entrepreneurialism that comes with it.

When I was hired, I knew this would be a fantastic place to kick-start my career, develop my professional skills and learn so much more about the business world. I haven’t had a dull day since joining, and I’d recommend the internship to anyone who is considering it. You won’t regret it.

TEAM RECOGNITION

The small things make a big difference. Over the years, Seven Hills has marked and celebrated team accomplishments in different and unique ways.

In addition to our annual awards and coverage of the month, we take the time to celebrate the smaller achievements. Whether it’s knockout coverage, our events team knocking it out the park or the first-class work of our Design Studio we believe these wins should all be recognised and celebrated internally.

Recent recognition has seen team breakfast or lunches, impromptu drinks, bottles of champagne and Selfridges vouchers for the team to enjoy. In addition to marking team anniversaries, birthdays and other mile stones.

DUKE OF YORK CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Seven Hills Duke Of York Award takes place at the end of each year and invites clients teams to submit their pitch for the Campaign of the Year.

The Seven Hills Duke of York Award first took place in 2015 and saw the shortlisted campaigns – British Business Bank, Advertising Week Europe and Simply Business – presented by The Duke of York himself at the Seven Hills offices. His Royal Highness visited the office to listen to the pitches and present the award to the winning team, Simply Business.

Last year Graeme Malcolm OBE, CEO and Founder of M Squared Lasers, handed out the award to the Innovate Finance campaign, with a special commendation given to the GP Bullhound campaign. Both presenters, Claire and Henry, were later invited by His Royal Highness to visit Buckingham Palace.

JP MORGAN CORPORATE CHALLENGE

This year we saw 15 members of the team head to Battersea Park to take part in the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge. The team were out in force (even sporting matching branded t-shirts) to complete 5.6k around Battersea park and enjoy a well-earned drink in the sunshine afterwards.

Seven Hills netball team shoots the stars

With a spring in their step, Seven Hills took to the netball courts of London earlier this year.
Affectionately named ‘Seven Skills’, the team put on spirited performances across the SW postcode area.
Although they didn’t bring home any wins, the team are adamant they had an enjoyable time – and are looking forward to donning netball vests once more when the season restarts. Although they have asked for Susannah to enter them into the beginners league this time, rather than the intermediate.

LEARNING TO SWIM IN THE TLA DEEP END

Matic Boh

When I joined Seven Hills in April 2017, it did not take long to realise that Tech London Advocates and its founder Russ Shaw held a special place in the campaigning mosaic of the firm. Russ and his mission to champion London tech is one of the most exciting campaigns to be a part of and I was delighted to join the TLA team shortly after becoming a fully-fledged Campaign Executive.

I quickly slotted into the well-oiled media machine that underpins the account, with reactive commentary, media briefings and opinion pieces coming thick and fast.

It was a special time to join the campaign, as TLA was expanding on a global scale and would soon begin to plan for the Tech World Tour – a gathering of tech experts from around the world, celebrating London’s unique position as the beating heart of a global tech ecosystem.

Suddenly, I was on the frontline of bringing the media’s attention to TLA’s biggest event to date. While it was certainly a challenge, the event was also the most exhilarating and rewarding experience of my time at Seven Hills so far.

There’s no such thing as a quiet day working with TLA – and I have enjoyed every minute of it!

See more of TLA here.

SEVEN HILLS SPOTLIGHT

Our Spotlight sessions provide regular opportunities for the wider team to come together and celebrate a job well done.

Each month, individual client teams present to the wider team and share how they approached a recent campaign or project. Highlighting best practice and leaving the team with a deeper understanding of what they’ve been working on.

These sessions are an opportunity to learn, ask questions and share ideas and insight.

To have a project or campaign you have recently been working on showcased at a the Seven Hills Spotlight, please speak to the Operations Manager to schedule an appropriate time.

Conquering Kili

Jemima Young

Kilimanjaro is one of the most recognisable mountains in the world: at almost 6000 metres high, it is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, and the tallest mountain in Africa. Even though Kilimanjaro may not be a technical climb, the hike is extensive and the altitude extreme.

I took on the challenge in 2015 in aid of the Meningitis Research Foundation. The charity provides life-saving support and funds vital medical research into meningitis and septicaemia. Climbing for such a worthy cause – and the chance of a small slice of glory – made the challenge a no-brainer.

Kilimanjaro is like trekking from the equator to the North Pole in a matter of days. It isn’t fitness that will get you to the top, but sheer willpower. The higher you go the more the altitude starts to hit. Everything slows down, the speed you can walk, your breath and even your thoughts.

The final trek happens overnight in sub-freezing temperatures (-35 degrees). We kept up a slow and deliberate pace, managing our energy and acclimatising to the altitude change. After eight hours of hazy walking, dawn broke and we crept over the top to enjoy a magnificent sunrise.

Although Kilimanjaro starts for many as a check box on a “to do list”, the climb pushes all your limits and becomes a journey like no other, an epic exercise in achievement.

AMBITION

WE BELIEVE THAT OUR BUSINESS CAN BE HEROIC

We want impact: we believe business can be brilliant as a force for good.

We think big: constantly challenging our business to be better, more curious, innovative and break through. Ideas matter.

We believe in growth: our clients are activists; optimists who make a difference.

STRAYOVER
BATTERSEA DOGS HOME

Seven Hills will be supporting Battersea Cats & Dogs Home in their first ever ‘Stray Over’.

This is a new fundraising event for corporate teams to support the work of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home with 10 members of the Seven Hills team due to give up their warm beds and home comforts to spend a night sleeping outside at Battersea’s iconic site.

PERSONALITY

WE ARE BRIGHT, TENACIOUS AND RESPECTFUL

We inspire spirit: we believe in good hearts, a can-do attitude, and we value inquiring, optimistic minds.

We work hard and fast: we don’t stop until the job is done, and done to the highest standard.

We aspire to be the best we can be: we believe in self-improvement and take pride in what we do and who we do it for.

ANNUAL TEAM AWAY DAY

Our annual team Away Day is an inspiring and engaging day for the whole team to spend together outside of the office.

This year, we kicked off our day with a team breakfast in Central London before heading to the new Unruly Clubhouse in Whitechapel for a mid-year presentation and a series of spotlight sessions from the team.

After wrapping up at Unruly we headed over to Swingers crazy golf for a team lunch and a quick nine holes. Following our sporting activities, we headed to Eight Club’s new roof terrace for sundowners whilst enjoying London’s skyline.

It has become a Seven Hills tradition to not disclose too much information ahead of the day and keep the team guessing on how each Away Day will unravel – here’s to the next.

DIGITAL BUSINESS ACADEMY

Digital Business Academy is a free online platform created by one of our former clients. It is created for anyone who might want to expand their digital skill base.

The content has been written in conjunction with UCL, Cambridge University Judge Business School, Founder Centric and Valuable Content. We selected four courses that are relevant to the work we undertake and recommend that everyone invests the time in completing these.

The courses are very easy and accessible mainly consistency short video tutorials, with practical advice and tips. We have suggested four recommended courses below, but do feel free to pick the lessons that are most interesting to you.

Build a Brand

Understand Digital Marketing Channels

Run a Digital Marketing Campaign

How to Use Social Media for Business

The courses take 30 minutes to complete online and you can return to explore the topic over 5 hours at your own pace.

MISSION BOOTCAMP

Throughout the year we run a number of Mission Bootcamps, these are day long workshops where we invite undergraduates to spend the day learning the skills of campaigning, before allowing them to try them out in fun, real world challenges.

At the end of the day, they pitch their ideas to the entire Seven Hills team. It’s not only a practical and engaging day but is how we spot young emerging talent to fuel our graduate programme.

Each year we appoint Campus Ambassadors from a number of Universities who are responsible for talent spotting undergraduates and help us to reach out the the student community.

Seven Hills races to the finish line at the J.P. Morgan Corporate Run

What do you think of when you imagine a balmy evening in London’s Battersea Park?

Try blazing sun, dirty trainers and sweaty faces.

Despite the 31-degree heat, Seven Hills stepped into their running shoes to join the annual JP Morgan Corporate Challenge. A score of Seven Hills team members competed with some of the city’s leading businesses, while fundraising for Cancer Research UK.

True to tradition, Sean Canty cantered to victory – cruising over the finish line in a cool 26.57 minutes.

Three cheers to Sean, Tokyo 2020 awaits.
